Impression™ Wave Ring FAQs

Demonstration Video

Please watch this video in full before creating your Wax Impressions.

If you have any concerns about the quality of your impressions please get in touch prior to sending them back. Unless our team have any concerns with the wax, your prints will be automatically processed on arrival to our studio. Adjustments or redo impressions can no longer be made once they are in production, so it is important you are happy with the impressions before you send them back.

Please remember, children under 12 months may not have defined enough prints for wax casting. Although it is case by case, we recommend waiting until you can see the lines on their fingers before going ahead.

FAQs

We recommend using a lighter to heat the wax ring. Hold the wax next to the flame, never directly on it, and slowly move it over the heat until the surface becomes slightly glossy and soft. This means it is ready to take your impression.

The wax will turn a dark purple when heated and become glossy. It should feel soft and pliable, while still holding its shape. If it feels too firm when you press into the wax, gently warm it again.

A small amount of blackening is completely normal, especially if you reheat the wax. This happens when the wax passes over the flame and will not affect your final jewellery piece.

As seen in the demonstration video, place a finger inside the wax ring to steady it and prevent any collapsing as you make the imprints on the outside. After heating the wax, immediately press gently but firmly so your finger sinks evenly into the wax. You don’t need to force it - steady pressure creates the best detail. If the impression isn’t deep enough, simply reheat the wax and try again.

You can reheat the wax and try again several times. The wax rings are designed to be reheated so you can experiment until you are happy with the impression.

Move on to a new wax if it becomes:

  • Very thin
  • Cracked
  • Collapsed

Each kit includes three wax rings, giving you the freedom to experiment with different impressions.

This is very common. If your impression doesn’t cover the full surface, simply reheat the wax and press again until you are happy with the result.

Yes. You can create more than one impression on a single wax ring. Simply heat one surface of the wax, take the first impression, then warm the opposite side while avoiding the area you’ve already pressed.

After heating, the wax will stay workable for around 5-10 seconds. It helps to have everyone taking an impression ready before warming the wax so you can take the impression while it is soft. If it cools too quickly, you can reheat it and try again.

No. The wax ring is simply the base used to capture your impression. Your final jewellery piece will be created to the exact ring size you provide on your return card using the ring sizer included in your kit.

Yes, it’s best to start with clean, dry hands. This helps the wax capture clear detail from your fingerprint or impression.

Even partial or slightly imperfect impressions can create beautiful finished pieces. Our jewellers carefully refine the edges while preserving the character and detail of your original impression.

Yes. Many people choose to create shared impressions, such as two fingerprints pressed together. Simply warm the wax and press both fingers into the soft surface at the same time. Alternatively, this ring also gives you the freedom to heat the wax and take two or more impressions at different times, removing the need for you to be in the same room at the same time.

Yes. Many families take impressions of children, babies, or pets. It can help to have someone assist you and keep them close beside you so you can work quickly while the wax is warm.

There’s no such thing as a perfect impression. Even light or partial prints can produce beautiful jewellery. Our jewellers refine the piece while preserving the unique character of your original wax impression.

Once all three wax rings are complete:

1. Use your phone torch to look closely at each impression.

2. Choose your favourite.

Place your preferred wax in Container #1, then label #2 and #3 in order of preference.

Yes. The return card must be completed in full so we can process your wax impressions.

Please include:

  • Your order number
  • Your ring size
  • Whether we may use your second or third preference

Your wax impression is used to create your jewellery using the lost wax casting method. This process replaces the wax with molten metal, meaning the exact impression captured in wax becomes your final piece in solid metal. Our jewellers then carefully refine the edges while preserving the unique detail of your original impression.

Because each piece is created from your unique wax ring impression, every item is made entirely to order in our studio.

Current lead times begin once your wax impressions arrive back to us and are processed.

  • Silver and Solid Gold: 3–4 weeks

If you choose to add a silicone mould, please allow an additional 2 weeks to these lead times.

Your finished piece will reflect the exact impression captured in the wax, so it’s important that you’re happy with how it looks before sending it back. It’s important to note that some fingerprints are stronger or less defined than others, often depending on age, but even faint prints can still leave a visible impression in the wax.

To check your impression clearly:

  1. Hold your phone torch over the wax, or
  2. Take a close-up photo using your phone flash.

If you can clearly see the details of the fingerprint or impression in the light, your wax is ready to send back.

If you’re unsure, you can email a flash photo of your wax impression to

impression@lindencookdesign.com and our team can confirm before you return it.

It’s very common for fingerprints to become softer or fainter with age.

The wax impression itself cannot be altered to deepen the fingerprint detail. However, you can still create a beautiful piece by focusing on capturing the shape of the finger impression.

You may also try pressing:

  • A knuckle
  • The side of the finger
  • The palm

These areas often create deeper natural lines that translate beautifully into jewellery.

If we believe your wax impressions may not produce the best result, our team will contact you before starting production. However, it’s important to remember that your interpretation of a good impression may differ from ours. For this reason, we always recommend checking your wax carefully before sending it back. When impressions arrive at our studio, we generally assume that you are happy with the result.

If we contact you to say that the impressions are too faint and you would like to try again, our team can provide a link to purchase a Redo Wax Kit. A Redo Wax Kit costs $30 AUD and includes new wax rings so you can create fresh impressions.

If you decide not to proceed with your order, we can offer a refund or store credit within one month of purchase. The refund will be issued minus the cost of shipping and the Impression™ Kit, provided the wax impressions have not been returned to our studio. Once the wax impressions have been returned and production has begun, the order becomes non-refundable.

All of our solid metal pieces can be worn in the shower and will maintain their colour and strength over time.

Yes - many customers create Impression pieces using their pet’s nose or paw. Simply warm the wax ring and gently press the paw or nose into the soft wax to capture the impression. For more tips on taking animal impressions, you can explore our animal impression guide.
